History

The Midwest Museum of American Art is in an old bank building in downtown Elkhart.

 

The building was built in 1922. In the late 1970s, two local art collectors, Richard and Billie Jane Burns, bought the building and turned it into a museum. The museum opened in 1979 so people in Elkhart could see American art.

 

What You Can See

Inside the museum you can see many kinds of American art, including:

• paintings
• drawings and prints
• sculptures
• handmade pottery

 

The museum has thousands of artworks from the 1800s through today.

 

Famous Artists

Some of the art in the museum was made by well known American artists like:

• Norman Rockwell
• Grant Wood
• Andy Warhol

 

The museum also has a very large collection of Overbeck pottery, which was made by artists from Indiana.

 

Visiting

The museum has changing exhibits and art programs during the year.

 

It is located on Main Street in downtown Elkhart, close to restaurants and other downtown places you can visit.
